Dear St. Johns Parent Magazine Readers,

As we embark on the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year, I am excited to celebrate the achievements of two exceptional leaders who exemplify the dedication and excellence we strive for in the St. Johns County School District. Their educational contributions inspire us to continue fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

I am delighted to announce that Kirstie Gabaldon, principal of Sebastian Middle School, has been named the recipient of the 2024-2025 St. Johns County Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership. Ms. Gabaldon began her career as a teacher at Allen D. Nease High School before serving as Bartram Trail High School Registrar and Assistant Principal at Creekside High School, RJ Murray Middle Schoo, and Sebastian Middle School. She has also served as principal of Switzerland Point Middle School and now leads Sebastian Middle School with unwavering dedication. Ms. Gabaldon is a faithful servant leader who has implemented systems and programs that drive student achievement and create safe, inclusive learning environments. Her mentorship of fellow educators, professional affiliations and accolades, such as the Governor’s Shine Award, highlight her profound impact on education. Congratulations, Ms. Gabaldon, on this well-deserved honor. Her application will now advance to the state level for further recognition.

Additionally, we celebrate Earl Brown, Assistant Principal of St. Augustine High School, who has earned the 2024-2025 St. Johns County Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award. Since joining the district as achemistry teacher in 2007, Mr. Brown has held roles as Testing Coordinator, Registrar and Assistant Principal, bringing warmth, energy and steadfast support to every position. Known for his genuine connections with students and staff, Mr. Brown’s leadership extends beyond the classroom to extracurricular events, fostering school pride and community spirit. We commend Mr. Brown for his dedication to the well-being and success of his school community and wish him the best as his application advances to the state level.

I also want to remind families that the Controlled Open Enrollment (COE) application window is now open. Depending on capacity, this opportunity allows parents and guardians to apply for their child to attend a school outside their zoned area. Seats are available at several elementary schools, including PVPV-Rawlings, Ocean Palms, Osceola, Crookshank and R.J. Murray and Sebastian Middle schools.  Applications are accepted February 3-21, 2025. For the complete list of available seats and additional information, including eligibility and how to apply, visit www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/coe/.

Keeping the momentum going is essential as we move into the second semester. Together, we can support our students in finishing the school year strong, encouraging a love of learning and setting goals that pave the way for success. Let’s continue working as a community to inspire and empower our children to achieve their fullest potential.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Tim Forson
