New year, new habits—right? If you're looking for a fresh start when it comes to family wellness, Marcie Gallagher has plenty of ideas to share. As the Membership & Family Program Director at the Brown Family YMCA–Ponte Vedra Beach, and a busy wife and mom of two, Marcie knows how tricky it can be to juggle it all while staying healthy. She also knows the power of leading by example. Her family has made it a priority to unplug from screens, spend intentional time together, and take advantage of programs and challenges that make healthy living fun and achievable. From squeezing in workouts during her kids’ practices to turning family time into active adventures, Marcie’s tips will help you kickstart healthy habits and keep them going all year long.
Marcie, how do you make time to take care of your own health while juggling work and family life?
While my kids are participating in their sports at the Y, I try to fit in a workout or go for a walk around the neighborhood. As a family, we enjoy walking along the beach when the weather is nice. Self-care is also a priority for me, whether it’s relaxing with friends or taking a moment to recharge on my own.
How do you encourage your children to adopt healthy habits, and what are some fun family activities you do together to stay active?
We stay active through family trips that involve hiking, exploring and other outdoor activities. Both my daughters are very active in sports at the Y, including swim team, volleyball and basketball. On Sundays, we enjoy playing pickleball as a family. We also participate in the YMCA’s quarterly wellness challenges, which are a great way to bond while promoting healthy habits.

What exercise or self-care practice do you prioritize, and how does it help you stay balanced and energized?
I prioritize walking, running and self-meditation. These activities help me stay balanced and energized, which allows me to engage more fully with my family and the families I work with. These practices are essential for both my physical and mental well-being.
What advice would you give to other parents who are trying to encourage their families to live healthier lives?
The advice I would give other parents is to be more engaged and active in your family's lives. Start by setting realistic and achievable goals for your family. Make health a fun and shared experience by finding activities that everyone enjoys, whether it is playing sports, hiking or cooking healthy meals together. Lead by example—your kids are more likely to adopt healthy habits if they see you practicing them.
