Kahlin Grant is a powerhouse. She is the owner of KAPOW, a digital marketing company based in Daytona Beach; a social media influencer, with 65k+ subscribers; and a wife to Tyler and mother to their children, Taylin, age 5, and Kyler, age 9.

As someone who has built a career around the very platforms that consume so much of our time, Kahlin offers a unique perspective on parenting in the digital age. We sat down to discuss how she navigates her children’s use of social media, particularly given her deep understanding of the digital landscape.

Social Media and Parenting: A Delicate BalanceKyler

Kahlin is careful about how much social media access she grants her son. (Taylin isn’t on social media.)

At 9 years old, Kyler is allowed to watch YouTube Shorts and play age-appropriate games, but he doesn’t have his own social media accounts. “I want to make sure he’s engaging with content that’s suitable for his age and that he understands the boundaries,” she explained. Kahlin said she and her husband set time limits on screen time and rely a lot on parental controls. “The controls aren’t perfect, but they help to keep him from accessing content I don’t think he’s ready for.”

As we chatted, Kahlin revealed something unexpected: she’s considering letting her son start a YouTube channel.

Why She’s Considering a YouTube Channel

Kahlin isn’t taking the decision lightly. “He’s been asking for a YouTube channel for a long time,” she shared. In fact, it’s this sustained interest in creating his own content that has led Kahlin to seriously consider launching a channel with Kyler in the coming months.

There are several reasons she’s thinking about taking this step:

Connecting in “His Language”: As a mother, Kahlin sees the value in connecting with her son on a platform he enjoys. “It’s a way for us to speak the same language,” she said. “We would bond over a shared interest.”

Accountability: “He would learn about the importance of committing to something and following through.”

Responsibility: He would learn to manage content and deadlines—important skills that will help him throughout his life.

Creativity: “I think YouTube could be a platform for him to express his creativity,” she said, whether through video creation or storytelling.

Time Management: It takes discipline to maintain a channel. Kyler would develop strong time management skills.

Entrepreneurial Skills: Managing a channel could also introduce him to the basics of entrepreneurship, giving him a head start on understanding how digital platforms can be used for more than just entertainment. “I think starting a channel now could set him up for the future—providing a stream of income that could help him buy his first car or help with college expenses.”

For now, the idea of a YouTube channel remains a consideration, but it’s clear that if Kahlin decides to move forward, it will be with intention and purpose. “It’s about spending time together, learning together, and helping him grow into the person he wants to become.”
